Has Internet Marketing Met Its Waterloo?

There’s been a lot of discussion of the death of internet
marketing in all its forms recently. Quite a few well known
marketers have jumped on the sensationalism which was
stirred up by “The Death Of adsense”, and some of them
have put out their own “Death Of” reports. The one which
has stirred up most controversy, and also the most support
was Mike Filsaimes “The Death Of Internet Marketing”.

But here’s the thing, Some commentators have probably
never read it right through, if at all, and immediately
assumed the report was a marketing ploy, or a way of
keeping the smaller marketers nose out of the trough of
internet marketing. A few may have skimmed the report
before making any comments, and still managed to get the
wrong end of the stick where this report was concerned.

So what was the underlying message in “The Death Of
Internet Marketing”?

The real message given through this sensationally titled
report was that internet marketers should stop marketing
internet marketing products to each other. There is a
finite number of people to bu*y each new internet marketing
uber-program, only so many people interested in buying
information products telling them how to sell information
products. Inevitably this market is getting saturated. Each
new potential internet marketer is getting caught in the
trap of buying the information to become a better marketer
only to think they need to sell it on again, repackaged or
not.

To put it another way, all the internet marketers out there
need to start looking at selling to ordinary people
interested in something other than marketing. We all need
to look outside the IM community, and look wider, or
narrower maybe, and sell into other niche areas.

To put that into perspective for yourself, consider the
first thoughts you had about making money by selling
online. I found it interesting to recall, that when I
looked back on it my reason for being online was for
finding out more about classic gaming, American cars, and
some of my other interests. Even when I looked into making
money from the internet my first thoughts weren’t of
selling marketing information, but of selling how to’s for
repairing cars, or motorcycles. As soon as I bought some
info to learn internet marketing, I found myself in this
whirlwind of buying marketing products with resell rights
and selling them to other people who wanted to learn about
internet marketing, and my original ideas were lost in the
maddening merry go round of ever increasing ebooks, and
software to sell to other marketers.

Does this sound like your own situation?

If it does, you need to stop, and take stock of what
you’re doing. Stop trying to sell to a saturated market.
Re-discover your real reason for being online, go back to
the hobby, or research which sent you in the direction of
internet marketing, re-ignite your passion for whatever
that was, and start again there. Use all the skills, and
tools you have learned from internet marketing to create
and sell your own information products based around a
subject you already know, and enjoy.

It will be easier, the people looking for information about
old cars, flower arranging or any other of the millions of
hobbies people pursue, are not marketers, they aren’t
getting 319 marketers sending carbon copy emails to them
with information on how to repair the unobtainable part for
their 1936 Buick which you know only needs a sprocket from a
2001 Datsun to make it work again. The woman searching
Google right now for information on removing tough stains
from silk garments hasn’t had 237 emails today offering
her your grannys tried and tested method for removing
stains from delicate materials. She is looking for
information to save a priceless heirloom, she is willing to
bu*y it, and no one is offering it because you’re too busy
writing your next email to sell the latest resale rights
ebook on listbuilding and getting it sent to several
thousand people who have seen the same ebook given away by
Joe Bloggs on the latest JV giveaway site which is open for
just the next five days.

It’s great to discover the new techniques for marketing
your widget, but they work even better on subjects who
haven’t seen this method used by loads of other people
already. Non marketers are amazed by a website which uses a
name squeeze to place their name in the salesletter, while
the canny marketer blots that out as a gimmick he’s seen
too often already.

So has internet marketing met its waterloo?

That’s an emphatic NO. Internet marketing is alive and
well and living the high life. It’s just the internet
marketing niche which needs to be pruned back. All the
techniques still work, but selling marketing tricks is
dying. Let’s all let it rest and recuperate a little, and
look into our own areas of expertise and make extra money
from all the subjects we care about, instead of one we just
want to harvest for all we can. As for me, I’m going back
to look at classic gaming, American cars and classic
motorcycles and find out what someone else is willing to
pay me to learn about them.

wife went to the bank to draw some money and phoned me to
say we had too much money. It was kind of difficult to make
the call to find out if it was a mistake somewhere in case
we had to give the money back! Even the woman on the banks
helpline found it amusing that someone phoned them to say
they had too much money. Luckily it was an expired
insurance policy we’d missed, and the insurance co had
paid us back over two years of our monthly payments. What a
great thing to happen while we are in christmas present
buying mode lol.

10 Simple But Effective Ways To Maximise Your Affiliate Sales

As an affiliate marketer your aim is to be making as many
sales as you can, so you need as many tools and techniques
as you can lay your hands on to make those affiliate sales.
The following ten tips are proven to increase vistiors, and
ultimately sales, to any website.

1) Offer a freebie to attract visitors to your site. Make
sure the freebie is related to the theme of your site, and
the affiliate product you are promoting. Even better if you
can also offer another FREE gift to anyone who tells their
friends about your site, this kind of viral marketing can
turn your site into a goldmine in just a few days.

2) Use a name squeeze page, so you can add your visitors
name to the webpage, and it becomes personal as if you are
talking directly to them. You can also capture other
information so you can send special offers, promotions and
remind them about your site regularly. This technique can
increase affiliate sales by leaps and bounds, especially if
used in conjunction with a FREE gift to exchange for the
visitors details.

3) Add a chat room or message board to your web site.
Having somewhere people can come and discuss their hobby,
or problems, with other likeminded members will keep them
coming back to your site to participate. Turning your
website into a themed portal with a messageboard and links
to other resources related to the affiliate products you
market will turn you into the expert, and your affiliate
marketing site into a useful resource.

4) Track and analyze all your promotional efforts. You will
be able to concentrate your time on the marketing strategies
which work, and drop any underperforming ones sooner. This
will mean you are not wasting time spinning your wheels
with something which is doomed to failure, and enable you
to use your time and resources to the maximum effect.

5) Make the most of every single visitor. Offer bribes in
the form of FREE gifts and discounts where possible in
return for interacting on your sites forums or
messageboards, and signing up for your newsletter.
Everybody is different, and offering a few alternative
gifts, or ways to earn those gifts will also help to
increase your return traffic. You get more chances to make
that sale.

6) Offer bonuses to anyone who purchases from your
affiliate link. There are hundreds of products you can bu*y
with resale rights, giveaway rights, or even private label
rights. Find several of these products which match or
complemement the affiliate items you are promoting and also
come with the right to use them as a bonus, and double check
that you may use them as a giveaway to people who purchase
your affiliate product. Now package them up and offer the
bonus to anyone who makes the purchase using your link.

7) Submit articles to article databases and ezine
publishers. Include your link to your website which has
your newsletter signup, or squeezepage in the resource box
and this will build links back to your site, and also your
increase your credibility as an expert in your chosen
field.

8) Start a viral promotion by using a FREE giveaway. When
done correctly you can gain exponential exposure for your
affiliate products and links. An ebook is an ideal vehicle
for and If you don’t feel up to writing it yourself, there
are a plethora of places to buy private label rights books
or articles you can use as if you did write it yourself.
Place some links to your chosen products in an ebook on the
same subject as you are promoting for, and make sure to
prominently place your list signup link in there too. Give
the ebook away, and allow anyone who gets it to give it
away too.

9) Start a blog on blogger.com or as part of your website
and use this as a place to collate articles, stories etc.
with some connection to your chosen subject. Blog
regularly, and ping at pingoat.com each time you blog. Make
sure each post carries a link to your affiliate products,
and try to incorporate your newsletter signup form in the
page too.

10) Practice good customer service - always. It’s easier
to sell a second time to someone who has had good service
from you. After you have given them a bonus for their
purchase, you can follow up with your happy customer, and
offer other offers they may find useful. It’s much easier
to keep a customer who trusts you than to get a new one.

Follow the preceding tips, and watch your affiliate
marketing soar to new heights of profit. Just one or two of
these can make the difference to your affiliate sales when
used properly. Use all of them together and who knows what
your results may be?

Quick Guide To Using Clickbank As An Affiliate Marketer

Clickbank is the affiliate marketers dream come true. Over
10,000 products in a searchable database for you to pick
and choose from. The product range in Clickbanks
Marketplace really does cater for almost everyon*e and their
hobby. All the affiliate marketer has to do is signup once
for a FRE*E account, and then start making those links.

The kicker is that it’s so simple to make a Clickbank
affiliate link. Choose your product to promote from the
Clickbank MarketPlace and Clickbanks script will give you
the opportunit*y to make your affiliate link right there and
then. A few clicks and you are ready to start your affiliate
marketing campaign. You can setup as many websites as you
can handle on different themes, and use Clickbank as your
product source to monetise them.

There is an important caveat in that last paragraph, did
you notice it?

You can setup as many websites AS YOU CAN HANDLE.
This is where the biggest mistakes happen with Clickbank
affiliates, it’s just so easy to make those links, and
then make new sites to promote tons of different products
you can quickly lose focus. One tip I will give here is
setup ONE site and start by making that profitable, then
start the next one once the first is working. This is the
same for any kind of marketing, test and tune the first one
until you get it right, then work on the next. Having too
many just makes tracking them a nightmare. It’s a case of
quality over quantity, where the old axiom of throwing
enough at it until something sticks is just a waste of
time.

Here’s something not too many people take notice of, the
Clickbank marketplace itself can also help you shortcut the
whole setup process by making it easier to find products
which actually sell. By taking note of the sites position,
you get an idea of how popular it is, but there is more
information there too. You can see how well a salespage is
converting on Clickbank by looking at the gravity results.
This tells you how well the product is selling right now,
and is weighted by Clickbank according to how recent the
sales were, and how many affiliate sales are being made. We
can use this as a guide to finding a product which sells
well right now.

Looking deeper though, we have to be careful of using the
gravity as the main reason to promote a product.Just
because a product has a lower gravity doesn’t mean it
isn’t a good seller. When something is new, the seller may
have a huge launch with specially invited affiliates to make
tons of sales quickly. But after this has died down, the
product still sells, and is still a good product, but the
big push is gone. This means you can pick up your Clickbank
affiliate link and make sales of this product with less
competition. Even really low scoring clickbank products can
be worth looking into, as it may just be a case of a poorly
marketed product which you can capitalise on.

Clickbank is an ideal place to start looking for affiliate
products to promote, it’s quick, easy and you are relying
on an established company to pay you, not the seller.
Clickbank tracks all sales, pays all commissions and takes
the payments for the seller, so you are in safe hands all
the way through. Isn’t it time you looked at how much you
can make from Clickbanks Marketplace?

Power Up Your Affiliate Marketing With Blogging

Blogs are a great way of making sales for an affiliate
marketing campaign. Since they appeared, blogs have all but
taken over from static websites of old, a regularly updated
blog with quality content is a veritable magnet for search
engines and visitors alike.

There are several blog scripts and services you can use as
an affiliate marketer, simplest would be to use Blogger.com
as it’s just a matter of signing up for an account and then
start posting. Our recommended blogging tool is Wordpress
installed on your own site. You should consider using
WordPress as it’s usually in the Fantastico link in your
webhosting cpanel so is very easy to install to your site
in just 3 clicks, giving you control over your own blog.
There are also plenty of themes available to change the
look of your vlog whether you use WordPress or Blogger.
It’s worth looking for a theme which ties in with your
affiliate products you will be advertising.

As an affiliate marketer, you have to love blogs for their
ease of updating, you can just copy and paste new content
into the form, hit submit and a new page appears in
seconds, all nicely formatted, linked and if you do it
right categorised. Adding blog content regularly is a lot
simpler than updating a static html website, and recoding
all the links manually to add your new page.Just type or
copy and paste your text, and click publish and it’s all
done for you.

But there’s more to it than the simple adition of content
to your blog, you can setup an affiliate product link in
the main site template, and that will be shown on every
page you create. As soon as you post you have effectively
created another link to your affiliate product and another
way for people to be drawn to the site to find it. If you
don’t feel like digging around the code to add your
affiliate link, you can always add it each time you post
(or a different affiliate product each time). Even better,
with the addition of some simple to install plugins your
blog can become a sales powerhouse, and even add Adsense
for a second source of income.

Even better for us affiliate marketers these plugins can be
found for fre*e online ready to download and install to your
blog. If you are using WordPress, then a plugin called “WP
Text Link Ads” is our FRE*E plugin of choice. Google for it,
install it following the instructions and then add keywords
and your affiliate links to associate with them. Every time
you post, your chosen keywords will become links to your
affiliate products automatically. Set it up with several
affiliate programs and as your blog traffic increases so
will your bottom line.

So you have your blog set up, and start posting, how do you
get the traffic flowing and get your affiliate links out
there?

In my own experience, I have found that “Pinging” your
blog posts very quickly starts the traffic flowing. Pinging
is just the term for letting other sites know your blog is
being updated. For ease and simplicity, I recommend using
Pingoat.com where you can put in your details of your blog
after you post, choose the services to ping, and click go.
Here’s the kicker, afterwards Pingoat will give you the
option to bookmark the url so you can ping your site by
using the pingoat link in your favourites. You could
automate this by adding this (very long) url to the
autoping section of your blog settings, but you’ll have to
work that out for yourself.

Once you start blogging and pinging your posts, the search
engines will find your blog, and as we stated from the
start search engines love blogs especially if they are
being updated regularly. This is great for your affiliate
marketing campaign as search engines bring the best kind of
traffic, FRE*E. Hopefully some of the visitors from this FRE*E
traffic source will be interested enough to click on your
affiliate links and bu*y the products you are promoting.

This is just the start though. If you learn all you can
about blogging, and keep adding relevant and high quality
posts to your blog, then your affiliate marketing campaigns
can become your chief source of income. Blogging and
affiliate marketing really are a great pair to get to know.

Some Do’s and Dont’s For Getting Started With Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing has to be one of the quickest, and
easiest ways of making money onlin*e. As an affiliate
marketer, you don’t need to create products, you will be
selling other peoples. You don’t need to hold any
inventory, you don’t need to accept payments, and you
don’t need to build super sales pages, in fact almost all
of the work has been done for you. As an affiliate
marketer, all you need to do is bring customers to your
chosen affiliate program. That said, before you rush in and
become an affiliate marketer, here are some do’s and
don’ts to save you wasting time, effort and money.

Firstly, listen up becuase this is important, and is
probably the number one reason most people give up on
affiliate marketing. A common mistake people make with
their website for affiliate marketing is using webpage to
promote loads of stuff at once, the worst examples are the
“banner Farms” where someone uses one page and adds
banners and links to all their affiliate programs with no
content. It won’t bring visitors, and any who do arrive
will disappear almost immediately.

To put it another way, as simple as it is to get started,
don’t join loads of companies at once and start promoting
everything. All you will do is waste time trying to promote
all of them at once, and not do a good job of promoting any
of them. The end result is invariably no sales at all. Pick
one or two products, preferably ones which you have used,
read or know something about, and start with those. Once
you have a succesful campaign you can add others, but one
at a time.

Here’s some advice for picking an affiliate program to
market, find something you’re interested in and research a
product in that niche you can sell as an affiliate. It will
be much easier for you to get excited, and show enthusiasm
for a product if you have an interest in it to start with.
Sure it’s possible to promote anything, but in starting
off, it’s easier for you to write about a subject you have
a passion for.

Here’s why you need a passion for your product to sell it
well, you can use a website of your own to send potential
buyers to, and presell them with a review of the product,
not a sales page, a review. While your potential customer
is there, capture some details, an email address and name
at least, into an autoresponder series. By getting these
details, and building a list of customers interested in
this product, you have the possibility of sending them
emails containing your affiliate link so they see the
product more than once. It doesn’t have to be difficult or
costly to setup either, there are plenty of FRE*E
autoresponders you can use (google for fre*e autoresponder)
and this is where your passion for your niche will help
again, as you can write a short course of emails to preload
into the autoresponder, so you can set it up and forget it.

But the real benefit of capturing the details of your
visitors, and sending them emails is that you get the
opportunit*y to sell to them again and again. If you find
other products in the future which relate to the original
one you were promoting, you can send one or two emails to
your list, knowing they are interested in this second,
third or whatever product and are more likely to bu*y.
We’re not talking about badgering the life out of your
subscribers, as they will then unsubscribe, but helping
them find products which may be of help, or value to them
in their lives.

Affiliate marketing isn’t rocket science, but learning a
few basics before you jump in can make a big difference.
Hopefully we have given you a basis to work from, so you
can get started in affiliate marketing for yourself, and
avoid some of the mistakes which could easily put you off.

Affiliate Project X and Your Own Products

Just in case you missed it, I’ll briefly explain what
“Affiliate Project X” is:
Affiliate Project X is an ebook which gives specific step
by step instructions for making money as an affiliate
marketer. The ebook takes you from beginner to expert in
just 50 pages, which sounds a bit short, but is actually
just what is needed to give you the information you need to
become successful in affiliate marketing.

I’m not pushing Affiliate Project X here, but I was
impressed with the information it contained, especially the
FRE*E methods the ebook gives for promoting products online.
These FRE*E methods got me to thinking how they could be
used elsewhere, not just in affiliate sales. It’s obvious
really, but if you apply the methods from Affiliate Project
X to your own products, even resale rights products you
have, then they will work for selling those too.

Not all the methods, and ideas from Affiliate Project X
will transfer to your own products, but most will, and if
you are using resale rights products with reseller sites,
then even more of the information becomes useful. The
research sections of APX can be modified to research your
competitors selling the same products (actually even
selling your own products could benefit from seeing how
your competitors do it) and then use the Affiliate Project
X methods to outsell them.

On the flipside, if you are selling your own products, and
using affiliate programs to help you sell, then reading
Affiliate Project X will show you ways you can help your
affiliates sell more of your products. Using the methods in
APX you can better understand what will make a good
affiliate program for your affiliates, and help them to
make more sales, obviously you shouldn’t give them the
information someone else is selling directly, but you can
use the information to find keywords, or make better sales
campaigns your own affiliates can use to both your
advantage. Affiliate Project X can show you other ways to
help your affiliate partners to make more sales and they in
turn will work harder for you.

So don’t let the name fool you, Affiliate Project X isn’t
just for affiliate marketers, it can help you sell your own
products, or even add value to your own affiliate program.
Read it through, and see what ways you can adapt to selling
your own products, and if you don’t already have it,

6 Tips On Using Templates For Your Adsense Or Business Website

Website templates are easily obtainable online, ranging
from simple, to technological wonders packed with clever
scripts and codes to add functionality, priced from FREE to
download, to very expensive, but you have a wide choice of
designs available at all price and technological levels.
Using a template can significantly speed up the building of
a website, and can also give you a professional look for
your site without the expense of hiring a designer. Using
website templates can also be a bit of a minefield in a
number of areas, including copyright, skill level, and
search engine placement. So what do you need to know to use
predesigned templates for your next website project?

1. What rights do you have with the templates?

As with any piece of work, designers can give you a
multitude of rights, allowing you various levels of freedom
to use the templates you buy or download. It’s important to
read the terms, and / or clarify your rights with the
supplier of the template. Some will allow you to change the
template as much as you like and may include source files
for any graphics so you can customise those too, while
others will limit you to using the template as is, and only
changing the text to your own. There are many levels in
between too, you may be allowed to change the copyright
notice at the bottom, or may be required to keep it there
pointing back to the suppliers website, or there maybe some
other small link back required for you to use the template.
So check your rights.

2. Where can the template be used?

You need to check this as well as part of your rights. Some
templates you download, and even some you buy will restrict
you to non commercial use. This would mean you can’t use
the template on a business site. Using a non commercial
template as a basis for an Adsense site could be a legal
grey area, as you are creating a site purely to make money,
so it could be construed as commercial use. Other
restrictions may mean you can only use the template on one
site, or domain, and you’d need a license for each site
you use the template on. Check the usage policy before you
buy or use a template.

3. Experience level.

What is your own experience level of web design? You are
going to need to know enough to edit the templates main
areas to add your content. This may involve a little tweak
here and there to make it fit your template, so you will
need to ensure your knowledge covers the technologies the
template uses. It’s not all HTML either. Your chosen
template may include CSS (Cascading Style Sheets),
Javascript functions, Area Maps for navigation, and any
number of other additional components. Find out first what
you will need to know, and decide if you know it already,
are willing to learn or are going to need to pay extra to
get it modified by someone else.

4. Do you have the right tools to edit the template?

If a template has any special code, or tricks included,
will your editor of choice be able to cope with them? Not
all editors are created equal, and some will mess up code
they don’t recognise, and stop the site from working
altogether. You may not always find this out until after
you have uploaded it. Obviously if you are using a text
editor like notepad, and doing it yourself you should
understand what you are doing before changing anything. If
you are using a wysiwyg html editor, like Frontpage,
Dreamweaver or any of the FREE utilities like NVU then you
need to make sure it won’t mess up the underlying code as
you add your content, and personalise the template for your
site. Checking up front that you have the required tools may
save you extra wasted time and money later.

5. Room for expansion.

Right now you have an idea for a site you want to create,
and the template you use is perfect, but what about the
future. If you want to add extra sections, pages or
content, will it be able to expand to compensate for it?
You need to take into account navigation links, if you will
need to add extra links to new sections, can you personally
add them (see experience and tools above) and do you have
room for them especially if an image is used with an area
map as navigation. It’s not going to be easy as you never
know what the future holds, but believe me when I say your
website is very likely to expand and grow, in fact it will
need to if it’s to do you any long term good.

6. What will it be used for?

Do you intend to use a template for a straight html
website, Wordpress blog, forum, or any other kind of site?
A straight html template will need a lot of work to convert
it for use on a wordpress blog, as they use tags to build
the site as they go, unlike a static html website. They
also require the template to be broken down into header,
footer and display elements with the necessary code for
menus etc. in the right place. It’s not easy, and forums
use the same methods. It’s easier to get a template
(called themes on interactive sites like blogs and forums)
which is designed for the purpose, than adapt one, unless
you are experienced in PHP and html and most likely CSS
too!

These are just some things you may wish to consider before
using a template for your first (or next) website. It could
save you a lot of wasted time in the long run for a few
minutes checking beforehand. Templates are a great shortcut
to a professional looking site and now you know what to look
for to make sure you don’t regret it later.

How You Can Monetize Your Website Without Using Adsense

Adsense is great. No doubting that, as a webmaster I have
learned to love the money I get from Google on a regular
basis. That said, it’s not the only way to monetize your
website, in fact there are other less intrusive ways to get
ads on your site which may just fit better with your own
style than trying to fit in one of Googles preset ad
Blocks.

There are plenty of choices too for monetizing your site,
from direct copies of Googles blocks, to hotlinking
specific words within your sites content. It doesn’t
matter if you use “proper” html pages, or a blog to add
your content, there are solutions to earn you money from
your writing.

So what is available?

Starting with Adsense style ad Blocks, you can host a
script on your own site, and display Adsense style blocks
containing links to ClickBank products containing your CB
ID. One of the easiest to install is called “CB ADS
Genie” (

) which you can add to your site and then just like Googles
Adsense, you add a small piece of code where you want the
ad to appear.
You can also use Amasense Ads (
http://amasenseads.com/thankyou/?vip=561 )which use Adsense
style Adblocks to promote Amazon Products. You can also use
this as an alternative url in Adsense to show Amasense ads
instead of the public service ads Google puts up when it
can’t match an ad to your site, to save you losing money
on those displays.
Be aware that you cannot use any ads which resemble Google
Adsense blocks on the same page as Adsense, so it’s one or
the other, not both.

Alternatives to Adsense style blocks are also worth a look,
especially as they can be added to your site alongside
Adsense without getting your account closed by Google.
One of the better known ones is Chitika Mini Malls (
https://chitika.com/mm_overview.php?refid=titchmarsh )which
displays a neat looking advert using keywords you select for
the page. The ads have a small picture, a short description,
and a search function all in one neat little box.

Text links are also useful, and there are some great ad
networks which will give you a code to insert into your
page to turn words into paying links related to the word.
Konterra ad network has been around long enough to be able
to recommend it, you insert a small piece of code into your
page, and it will turn certain keywords into links which you
get paid for clicks on.
A new but up and coming ad network is ContAds (
http://www.contads.com/ref.php/190 )ContAds uses the
reliability and huge variety of Clickbank to deliver ads
related to keywords. You have to install a small script on
your website once, but then it’s a matter of placing some
code snippets around your content page to start with and a
small piece of code at the end of any page you want the ads
to appear on. It will do the rest for you to start earning.
You will need a ClickBank ID for this to work though.
Contads also offers a selection of videos to show you how
to get started, and even how to add this system to your
Wordpress blog to monetize that.

So now you are acquainted with the Adsense alternatives,
isn’t it about time you monetized your websites in other
ways too?
Diversify your ads, and see what works best for your site.
Adsense isn’t the only game in town anymore.

Things I learned About Marketing From The Simpsons.

The Simpsons, what a bunch, they keep us entertained with
their jaded kind of family life, getting in and out of
scrapes, and coming back each week to do it all again.

But there’s marketing gold in some of those crazy antics,
and if you look out for it you can learn a lot from the
Simpson families business failures. Lets review just a few
of the Simpson marketing tips right here.

Homers telemarketing scam. As “The HappyDude” Homer
Simpson used an autodialer to call everyon*e in Springfield
to offer them the chance to be as happy as he was for just
a small payment. Yeah he made a small amount as some people
desperate for happiness sent in their dollars, but he had
annoyed almost everyon*e else in the little town, and got
arrested for the scam, and public nuisance.

So what can we learn from this failed entrepreneurial
attempt?

You make some quick bucks with an easy solution *if* you
can reach enough people, but it won’t last. A real
business takes time, and a real product to succeed. You
also learned how annoying unwanted ads can be such as
telemarketing calls, and spam emails, which are cheap, and
easy to send to hundreds of people, but will get you shut
down just as quickly.

Barts T’ shirt business. Bart realised he was growing up,
and printed a slogan on his t’ shirt to show his
displeasure with the world. He soon had some others, and
people started offering to bu*y them from him. In true
Simpson style his business boomed quickly, and he got taken
in by a bigger company, to whom he sold the rights to the
t’ shirt slogans. The big corporation suckered him, and
left him without an income again.

Our lesson is to be sure what we are giving up before we
sign any contract. Always read the small print, Bart lost
out because he didn’t copyright his designs, and was
suckered out of them in a bad deal.

Homer the beer baron. In this episode, Springfield bans
beer after Bart is found drunk due to an unfortunate
accident. After Fat Tonys gang are stopped from supplying
the beer, Homer starts his own black market beer supplying
business from his basement, using barrels he digs up from
where they were dumped. When it runs out he brews his own,
and makes a nice living from the venture until he decides
to help chief Wiggum by turning himself in to the cop.

What did this episode teach us? That even someone as dumb
as Homer J can make money if they find a thirsty crowd, and
offer the thirst quencher they desire. OK so it was an
illegal operation, but Homer still found the crowd, and a
way to fulfill their needs, making him a tidy profit in the
time it lasted.

Homer the Grease Magnate.. almost. When Homer discovers a
company that will pay for used cooking grease he and Bart
start scraping up all the grease they can to sell. Homers
first attempts to get grease make him a few cents, but from
cooking up joints of meat which cost tens of dollars. He
tells Bart he is still the winne*r because he made money,
and Marge pays for the meat which he fed to the dog to
claim the grease. But as always, Homers poor planning ends
up with his business failing once again despite throwing
tons of enthusiastic energy at the project.

Our lessons in this (actually all of Homers ventures
qualify here) episode are that planning is vital to
success. Firstly Homers 60 cents from twenty-seven dollars
worth of bacon is quite a loss, but lots of people are
working that way in their own business by not tracking
their paying out versus profit ratios. Secondly Homer has
no means of getting the grease worked out, no plans for
carrying it and even falls foul of another grease
collection company, as he tries to obtain grease.

Maybe a little planning, and some careful cost counting
would help some of the Simpsons entrepreneurial endeavours,
so would staying the right side of the law. So before you
rush into any business, or marketing do what Homer
doesn’t, and make a plan, work out your expenses and keep
an eye on them. Check all the contracts, and any rights you
have before doing anything.
On the bright side, Homer does seem to be able to find
those markets with a niche he can fill, so at least we can
copy that, by looking for thirsty crowds and offering them
a drink we know they’re looking for.
